Joseph learns of the painter Titorelli more by chance than any of the bank customers. He visits him and tries to find out more about the court. Like most of the characters has apparently also Titorelli contacts with some members of the Court and promises to help Josef somehow.
The painter explains that there are three ways survive the process as a free man:
- Real acquitted: The court decides on its own to acquit the accused.
- Apparent acquittal: This would have the artist use a model formulation of an acquittal, and also vouch for Joseph's innocence. Obviously this would extend into the field of document forgery. This would need to carry out high, but this one-time effort.

The artist further says that it is extremely difficult to convince the court of an innocence, if it thinks first of the guilt of an accused (evidence is not clearly decisive). Strictly speaking, this is practically impossible and even stand a ruling in this case basically already determined.
